2011~
The 3rd annual Ostomy Education Day was held
Saturday, April 9th at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. This year
we had approximately 60 participants. The program consisted of Dr
Michael Page, colorectal surgeon who gave a presentation on
parastomal hernias. This year we used some of our own WOCN’s as a
panel who each gave a short, presentation on a different topic.
Mary Mahoney gave an interesting history of ostomy products. Rita
Huntrods portrayed how important it is to cut your wafer opening
size correctly. Joyce Otto followed with a well received
presentation on fungal infections. Barb Rozenboom wrapped up by
providing resources for ostomates. The audience was given an
opportunity to write questions for the WOC Nurse panel to address.
Bob Molsberry was our motivational speaker this year. Bob is a
pastor, triathlete, author, ostomate and paraplegic. He spoke about
how his life has evolved since his bicycle accident and the format
it has provided him to inspire others. Back by popular demand was
the ostomy breakout sessions. We had positive feedback on how this
is helpful to share and ask questions of those who have the same
type of ostomies. We were pleased to have 25 vendors participate
this year. We had 8 company representatives present and 13 WOCN’s
who volunteered their time to be stationed at vendor tables. Many
thanks to the Ostomy Education Day Committee: Rita Huntrods, chair,
Mary Mahoney, Barb Rozenboom, Joyce Otto, Zoe Bishop, Tami Hoyt,
Janice Graham, Janelle Schoefeld and Nancy Medick. If you interested
in serving on this committee sign up at fall conference. Many thanks
to our WOCN volunteers: Cathy Smith, Kim Kopp, Janet Tinker, Kiane
Goebel, Cathy Williams, Ricki Jones, Laura Phearman, Mary Puzder,
Lynn Chandlee, Renee Visser, Liz Brecht. Thank you to those who
helped promote the education day to their local ostomy patients.

Pharmacist things to consider about medications when you have an

preparing for xrays and tests. Susan Leatham, Hospice Chaplain from

Thank you to the Iowa Affiliate WOCN for sponsoring the
first and what we hope to be, annual, Ostomy Education Day. The event
was held Saturday, April 4th at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. We
had 50 participants including
ostomates, their support people
and WOCN's. People came from as far away as Moline, IL and Sioux City,
IA.
Coloplast, Convatec and
Hollister had representatives to display and demonstrate their products.
The UOAA, Ostomy Secrets and KEM also sent information and products to
display. Vendors were well received by the participants and each vendor
reported they would participate again.
Despite some last minute speaker cancellations the
program was a success. Dr
Soren Kraemer,

ostomate and a home care nurse shared her ostomy story and
adventures of participating in the Youth Rally. Mary Mahoney, CWOCN
